Fuel prices have registered yet another surge across the country. On Monday, oil marketing companies hiked the price of petrol by up to ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by up to ₹2.71 per litre. This marks the fourth upward revision in fuel rates over the last 10 days, further compounding the financial worries of the common man.

Following the latest hike, petrol in the national capital, Delhi, has reached ₹102.12 per liter, while diesel is now retailing at ₹95.20 per litre. Prior to this, fuel prices had also seen an increase of 87 to 91 paise on Saturday.

Following Monday’s steep revision, petrol prices have scaled record highs across the country’s major metropolitan areas. In the national capital, Delhi, petrol surged by ₹2.61 to touch ₹102.12 per litre, while Kolkata witnessed an even sharper jump of ₹2.87, pushing the rate to ₹113.51 per litre. Meanwhile, Mumbai and Chennai saw petrol prices climb to ₹111.21 and ₹107.77 per litre, respectively. This relentless upward trajectory in fuel rates has severely disrupted the monthly budgets of the middle class and daily commuters who rely heavily on personal vehicles for their everyday transport.

The burden on consumers has been further compounded by a substantial spike in diesel prices, which are critical to the country’s supply chain. In Delhi, diesel rates jumped by ₹2.71, taking the retail price to ₹95.20 per litre. In Kolkata, the price of diesel is now on the verge of breaching the century mark at ₹99.82 per litre, while in Mumbai, it has reached ₹97.83 per litre. Because diesel powers the commercial transportation and freight sectors, this significant hike is expected to immediately inflate logistics costs, triggering widespread fears of a cascading rise in the prices of essential commodities and daily goods across retail markets.
