Delhi-NCR Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Strong Winds And Light Rain As Heatwave Persists
NOIDA | Ahead of ‘Nautapa’ period (the nine hottest days of summer), the weather pattern in Delhi-NCR has taken an unexpected turn. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for the national capital and the surrounding NCR region, forecasting strong surface winds, dust storms, and light rain or thundershowers over the coming days. According to weather officials, surface winds could clock speeds of up to 50 km/h.
Severe Heatwave to Persist Until May 27
Despite the forecast of erratic showers, severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist across Delhi-NCR between May 25 and May 27. However, intermittent cloud cover and light drizzle will likely cap the peak temperatures.
May 25: The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 44°C, with a minimum of 30°C. The sky will remain generally cloudy with a high probability of light rain. Intense heatwave conditions accompanied by strong winds are expected to peak during the afternoon and evening hours.
May 26: A similar weather pattern will continue, with temperatures expected to range between a high of 44°C and a low of 29°C. The IMD has retained its warning for strong surface winds and afternoon heatwaves.
May 27: The mercury will hold steady at a maximum of 44°C and a minimum of 29°C, with scorching winds continuing to impact daily life.
Major Respite Forecasted from May 28
A significant meteorological shift is anticipated starting May 28, bringing a much-needed drop in temperatures.
May 28: The maximum temperature is projected to slide down to 42°C, while the minimum will settle at 30°C. Generally cloudy skies and light drizzle are expected, and notably, the weather department has dropped all severe weather warnings for this day.
May 29 & 30: A substantial cooling trend will follow. On May 29, the maximum temperature is forecast to plunge to 36°C with a minimum of 29°C. By May 30, the mercury is expected to drop further, ranging between 36°C and a comfortable 25°C, supported by persistent cloud cover and light showers.
‘Nautapa’ May Avoid Extreme Heat This Year
Weather experts suggest that the combination of high-speed winds and early spell of rain might take the sting out of the initial days of Nautapa this year. Consequently, the probability of the mercury breaching the grueling 46°C mark remains low.
Nevertheless, high humidity levels and afternoon loomed-heatwaves will still pose a challenge. The IMD has advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, stay well-hydrated, and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.
