Expressway Carnage: Cop And Convict Among 6 Dead After Sleeper Bus Overturns In Unnao
UNNAO: A horrific road accident on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway has claimed six lives and left more than 15 others injured. The accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday. The tragedy occurred when a private travel bus packed with passengers heading from Delhi to Bihar lost control and overturned.
The accident took place at kilometer marker 262 under the jurisdiction of the Auras police station. According to reports, the sleeper bus was carrying over 30 passengers. The impact of the crash was so severe that several passengers were thrown out of the vehicle and plunged off the elevated expressway, sustaining catastrophic injuries. Screams of terror echoed through the night as passing motorists rushed to help.
Police Sub-Inspector and Convict Among the Deceased
According to the police, the deceased include a Police Sub-Inspector and a convict under his escort. The officer has been identified as Sub-Inspector Ramchandra, a native of the Siwan district in Bihar. Preliminary inputs suggest that the officer had traveled to Delhi to escort the convict, identified as Chhatrapal, and the duo was returning to Bihar when the fatal crash happened.
Upon receiving the alert, emergency response teams from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and local police rushed to the scene to spearhead rescue operations.
The injured were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to a nearby hospital. Passengers with critical trauma were subsequently shifted to the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) Trauma Center in Lucknow, while others are currently undergoing treatment at the Unnao District Hospital.
Driver Logged Sleep Appears to be the Cause
The local police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the crash. Initial findings suggest that the driver may have dozed off behind the wheel, causing the speeding vehicle to veer off course and flip over.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Expresses Grief
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognizance of the tragic incident. Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of six lives, the Chief Minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
He directed senior administrative and police officials to remain on-site to oversee the rescue operation. Furthermore, the Chief Minister instructed the administration to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and ordered officials to expedite necessary ex-gratia and support to the families of the victims.
