New Delhi | Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant full statehood status to Delhi.

Reacting to Modi’s tweet greeting Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram on their Statehood Day, Kejriwal said on Twitter: “Sir. Delhi is also waiting for its statehood day. You had promised to the people of Delhi that you would grant full statehood to Delhi. Kindly do it sir. People of Delhi have faced injustice for 70 years now.”

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is planning to take up the issue in its Lok Sabha poll campaign and to also hold a mass movement.

It will distribute Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manifestoes for previous elections, including that of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, in which the party said that it supported the demand for full statehood to Delhi.

Taking the initiative forward, Kejriwal had already started retweeting old BJP tweets where the party had promised or demanded full statehood.

He even shared a tweet by Modi from 2013.

“Before becoming the PM (Prime Minister), Modiji had raised the issue of full statehood to Delhi. Now he is the PM. The people of Delhi wants to remind him of his promise,” the AAP chief added.
