Odisha has become first state in the country where diesel surpassed the cost of petrol. While diesel was sold at Rs 80.69 per litre in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, petrol was sold at Rs 80.57 a litre.

This is for the first tim that the diesel prices have gone past the cost of one litre of petrol.

The high diesel prices mean that costs of essential items would go up and this would impact the lives of the common people.

Odisha is one such state where VAT rates are uniform on both Petrol and Diesel prices. But this is not the case in every state. In majority of the states, VAT rates are higher on petrol than diesel, thereby making former costlier than the latter.
