A man in his early twenties allegedly committed suicide in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday after his wife refused to observe ‘Karwa Chauth’ fast. The deceased was identified as Deep Chand. He was found hanging from the ceiling fan of a room in his house.

Hindustan Times quoted Vrindavan police station in-charge Ram Pal Singh Bhati as saying that no suicide note was found. He added that the couple had got married four months ago and had a dispute over ‘Karwa Chauth’ fast.

Bhati told the daily that the deceased was insisting that his wife should observe the fast but the woman refused to do so.

Quoting sources, Hindustan Times stated that the woman had said no to observing fast on account of her poor health. She was also backed by her mother-in-law. But Deep was firm on his stand who locked himself in the room and hanged himself from the ceiling fan.

‘Karwa Chauth’ fast is observed by married women for the long life of their husbands.
