A 25-year old unmarried woman attempted to self-deliver the baby while watching a child-delivery video on YouTube. Both the woman and the child died in the process. The incident took place on Sunday night under the limits of Cantonment police station in Gorakhpur.
Hindustan Times quoted Station House Officer (SHO), Cantonment, Ravi Rai as saying that the possible reason behind attempting self-delivery was fear of social stigma attached to being an unmarried mother.
The woman used to live in a rented accomodation in the city. Her neighbours were first to discover the blood flowing out of the room of the woman. They informed the landlord about it who in turnĀ apprised the police.
Rai was further quoted as saying that when the door of the room was broke open, the woman and her newborn were found lying dead. Scissors, blade and some such other material was found near the woman’s body. The bodies were taken into custody and sent for postmortem examination.
Rai said that woman’s smartphone revealed that she was watching ‘how to deliver baby by self’ on YouTube.
The police official told HT that the woman had taken the accomodation on rent just four days back and that her relatives who were told about the incident confirmed that she was unmarried.
Times Of India quoted SHO RaviĀ Rai as saying that they found contact numbers of the woman’s family in her phone and informed them. The woman belongs to Bahraich.
