New Delhi | US President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Caribbean nation Cuba, delivering what amounts to an ultimatum: reach a deal with the United States or face serious consequences.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Their lifeline from Venezuela is now being cut off. Make a deal with the United States before it’s too late. ZERO! They will get nothing anymore — no oil, no money — ZERO!”

He followed up with another post saying, “I advise them to make a deal before it is too late.”

Trump’s remarks are being seen not merely as rhetorical threats but as a direct economic pressure tactic against Cuba. For decades, Cuba—already burdened by sanctions—has relied heavily on subsidized oil and financial support from Venezuela to sustain its economy. Recent reports suggest that the United States is now exerting greater control over Venezuela’s oil exports, making it easier to disrupt the supply chain that reaches Cuba. This context explains Trump’s reference to cutting off Cuba’s “lifeline.”

The statements also indicate Washington’s desire for political change in Cuba, or for Havana to submit fully to US demands. This intent is further reflected in Trump’s second post, where he suggested that Secretary of State Marco Rubio should be given “control” over Cuba, citing Rubio’s Cuban heritage as justification.

Trump also reshared a post by a Truth Social user named Cliff Smith, dated January 8, which read, “Marco Rubio will be the President of Cuba,” accompanied by a laughing emoji. Responding to the repost, Trump commented, “I like it!” Notably, the user—described in his bio as a “Conservative Californian”—has fewer than 500 followers.
