A fire incident once again occurred at the Magh Mela being held in Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh). A tent at a camp near the old railway line caught fire. This was the third fire incident in 48 hours. Before the fire brigade could extinguish the flames, the tent was completely gutted. One person sustained serious burn injuries and has been admitted to SRN Hospital for treatment.
Chief Fire Officer of the Magh Mela, Animesh Mishra, said they received information at 11:08 pm about a fire at a camp located near the old railway bridge at the intersection of Ganpati and Annapurna Marg. Fire engines reached the spot within two minutes and eight fire tenders were deployed. The fire was brought under control quickly.
He confirmed that one youth was injured in the incident and has been sent to the hospital for treatment. According to the officer, preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused by an ‘Akhand Jyoti’ (a continuously burning lamp), although the exact cause is still under investigation.
Speaking to news agency IANS, camp in-charge Yogesh Mishra also said that an Akhand Jyoti was lit at the site. He stated that it appears the fire may have started because of this. At the time of the incident, his nephew was sleeping in the tent. By the time people nearby noticed the fire, it had already spread. Locals managed to rescue the injured youth and rushed him to the hospital.
Kalpavasi Shiv Devi Mishra said she did not know how the fire started. She recalled that someone informed the police about a fire in Sector No. 5. When the police arrived and broke open the door, they woke up. Her sister and other family members were sleeping inside the tent at that time.
She added that when they stepped outside, they saw a bright glow caused by the fire. She immediately woke everyone up and asked them to leave the tent quickly. They managed to escape in time, but later found that everything in the camp had been destroyed in the fire.
