Free Wi-Fi helped ‘Coolie’ to crack Kerala government job exam

For many Wi-Fi would be a source for watching movies, streaming music and downloading endless number of photos and videos, but for Sreenath K, a luggage porter (Coolie) at Kerala’s Ernakulum Junction railway station, the technology was meant to study for achieving the set goal. Sreenath with the help of free Wi-Fi available at the station managed to clear Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) exam by scoring 82 marks out of 100. He is now due for his interview.

Sreenath used to download the study material on his mobile phone and listen to those using the earphone. He simultaneously used to work to make a living. The 27 year old Shrinath is a native of Idukki district in Kerala and by achieving this feat has certainly managed to inspire hundreds and thousands of youths sweating hard to crack competitive exams.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter on May 9 to congratulate Sreenath stating that Railway’s free WiFi has brought a huge change in the life of Sreenath working as a Coolie (Porter) in Kerala. He further wrote that using WiFi available on station, Sreenath prepared for the competitive exam and managed to clear it. “I wish him on his success..”, Goyal wrote in his Twitter message.

RailTel, in association with Google had launched Railwire project to give passengers internet connectivity at railway stations. This service was launched in 2015 under the Centre government’s ambitious Digital India campaign. The free Wi-Fi provides high speed internet to passengers across all major railway stations in the country.
