Mumbai | Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar has mourned the death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in the Baramati plane crash, calling it a tragic accident and appealing for restraint against politicising the incident. Describing the loss as irreparable for Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar said the sudden demise of a committed and hardworking leader has deeply shaken the state. He firmly rejected rumours of conspiracy circulating on social and media platforms, urging people to respect the grief of the moment and not turn a human tragedy into political speculation.

In a post on X, Sharad Pawar described Ajit Pawar’s sudden death as a major shock to the state, saying Maharashtra had lost a capable and decisive leader. He clarified that some sections of media and social media were wrongly spreading speculation about political motives behind the crash, reiterating that it was purely an accident.

The crash occurred on Wednesday in Baramati when a chartered aircraft travelling from Mumbai attempted to land for the second time amid dense fog and low visibility of around 800 metres. The aircraft reportedly skidded off the runway, crashed into a field and burst into flames. All five people on board were killed — Ajit Pawar, his personal security officer Vidip Jadhav, Pinky Mali, pilot Sumit Kapur and co-pilot Shambhavi Pathak.

Ajit Pawar, 66, was a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, having served multiple terms as deputy chief minister and played a significant role in the state’s cooperative sector, irrigation policies and rural development. He was travelling to Baramati, his traditional political stronghold, to campaign for local body elections when the tragedy occurred.
