New Delhi | The Union Home Ministry has cancelled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, a non-government organization associated with the Gandhi family. This foundation, headed by former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, will no longer be allowed to take foreign funds.
According to sources, the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation has been cancelled due to violation of foreign funding rules. The Ministry of Home Affairs had also constituted a committee in the year 2020 to investigate this (violation of foreign funding). This decision has been taken on the basis of the report of the same inquiry committee.
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is the chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, while other trustees include former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former finance minister P. Chidambaram and MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

According to the information, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation came under the scanner in July 2020. The Ministry of Home Affairs then constituted an inter-ministerial committee headed by an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer to investigate NGOs, including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, linked to the Gandhi family. It was accused of tampering with income tax returns including suspected FCRA violations.
The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was formed in 1991. For several years this foundation worked on many important issues including health, science and technology, women, children and education. At the same time, in the year 2020, BJP President JP Nadda also alleged that the foundation has taken such funds from China, which is not in the interest of the country.
