“Gyanesh Kumar should atleast be given Padma Bhushan….”, says senior BJP leader

Amid the ongoing political storm surrounding Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya has come out strongly in his support.

Bhattacharya said that Gyanesh Kumar deserves at least the Padma Vibhushan for conducting peaceful, fear‑free elections in Bengal and for rectifying the voter list.

Speaking to the media, Bhattacharya remarked: “The Congress party itself doesn’t take Rahul Gandhi seriously, so why should anyone else? Gyanesh Kumar should at least be awarded the Padma Vibhushan. The people of Bengal are happy that, after so many years, they were able to cast their votes free from fear and intimidation, without any incidents of killings.”

He dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s allegations, emphasizing that under Kumar’s leadership, the historic task of removing Bangladeshi infiltrators’ names from the voter list in a border state was made possible.

This statement has come at a time when the Election Commission is facing sharp criticism from the opposition over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

An English daily recently reported that the Commission’s two other members—Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi—had recorded written dissent at least 14 times in the past 10 months regarding decisions linked to the SIR.

Following this, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a press conference on Thursday (September 24), levelled serious charges against the CEC and demanded his resignation.
