Bareilly City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri suspended a day after resignation

Lucknow | The Uttar Pradesh government has taken stringent disciplinary action against Bareilly City Magistrate (PCS Officer) Alankar Agnihotri, placing him under immediate suspension following his abrupt resignation. Agnihotri, a 2019-batch officer, had resigned on Monday (January 26) citing his support for Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati and his opposition to new University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations.

Treating the officer’s conduct as a prima facie violation of service rules, the Uttar Pradesh government issued orders for his suspension with immediate effect. The Divisional Commissioner of Bareilly has been appointed to lead a formal departmental inquiry into the matter. During the suspension period, Agnihotri will receive only a subsistence allowance and has been attached to the District Magistrate’s office in Shamli pending the completion of the probe.

In his resignation sent via email to the Governor and Bareilly District Magistrate Avinash Singh, Agnihotri highlighted two primary reasons for his departure:

UGC Regulations: He labeled the new UGC guidelines as “Black Laws,” arguing that they would detrimental to the academic environment of colleges and universities.

Magh Mela Incident: He expressed deep resentment over alleged misconduct by the administration towards the Batuk (student) disciples of the Shankaracharya during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj. Agnihotri alleged that the disciples were assaulted during the Mauni Amavasya holy dip, yet the administration failed to take any concrete action against the perpetrators.
