Man started making dog-like sounds, sticking out his tongue, attempting to bite anyone after being bitten by stray dog, admitted in hospital

Aligarh | A serious and alarming incident highlighting the deadly risk of rabies has been reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district. A young man developed severe and unusual symptoms within hours after being bitten by a stray dog, triggering panic in his village.

According to media reports, the incident took place in Utwara village under Khair tehsil. The victim, Ramkumar (23), son of Vijaypal, was bitten on the leg by a stray dog on the evening of December 20 at around 6:30 pm while he was moving around the village. After returning home, his family washed the wound but did not seek immediate medical treatment. Instead, they resorted to traditional home remedies commonly practiced in the village.

Family members said Ramkumar remained normal until around 9 pm and even had dinner. However, around 11 pm, his condition suddenly worsened. He became extremely restless, complained of intense itching, and began behaving abnormally. He started making dog-like sounds, sticking out his tongue, sniffing people, and attempting to bite anyone who came close. The situation became so serious that, for the safety of both the family and villagers, he had to be tied to a cot to restrain him.

On the evening of December 21, the family rushed him to the Khair Community Health Centre (CHC). After examining him, CHC Superintendent Dr Rohit Bhati described his condition as critical and referred him to a higher medical centre in Delhi. Doctors stated that the young man was showing severe symptoms consistent with rabies. He was subsequently admitted to AIIMS Delhi for advanced treatment.

Dr Rohit Bhati warned that animal bites should never be taken lightly. Rabies is a fatal viral disease and if anti-rabies vaccination is not administered in time, the virus can rapidly attack the brain and nervous system often proving fatal. He urged people to immediately seek medical treatment at the nearest health facility after any animal bite and avoid relying on home remedies or superstitious practices.
