Shimla : Adequate arrangements have been made by the state government to facilitate tourists visiting the Himachal Pradesh capital, the government said on Saturday.

There is shortage of water but there is no crisis as is being reported in a section of the media, a spokesman for the state Tourism Department said in a statement.

He said the water supply situation is being monitored by the Chief Minister himself along with senior officers and necessary measures are being taken so that people do not face any problem.

Due to constant efforts, the water availability is improving each day and the rain on Friday also brought some relief, he said, adding that adequate water supply is being ensured to hotels.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur reviewed the water supply situation in Shimla through video conferencing from New Delhi.

An official statement quoting Thakur said 28.47 million litres per day water (MLD) was received on Saturday and he was hopeful the situation would improve further soon.

He said the state government would make long-term plans for drinking water supply in Shimla by tapping various natural water sources.

Officials blame water shortage on the rising mercury and the drying up of natural water channels. Shimla has a population of nearly 200,000 that requires 42 MLD water.
