Amid reports of a woman having buried her newborn in a cow dung pit soon after birth, Mayurbhanj district police in Odisha have started their investigation. The alleged crime was executed on Wednesday night.

The woman has been identified as Masuri Singh, wife of tribal man Hindu Singh.

According to Hindustan Times, police in Odisha’s tribal dominated district of Mayurbhanj are interrogating the woman who is said to have buried her child soon after his birth.

The daily quoted Sarat police station inspector Nabaghan Mallick as saying that the body has been exhumed and sent for postmortem examination.

The matter reportedly opened up only after the locals alerted the police on Friday evening. Locals grew suspicious of ‘something wrong’ after foul smell came out of the pit.

While the woman reportedly told the police that the child was a stillborn, locals alleged that she was trying to hide the baby since he was born out of a wedlock.

The woman’s husband who was away to Kerala returned on Wednesday and came to know about the incident.
