New Delhi: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Wednesday morning in his country’s first high-level engagement with India after Modi returned to power with a thumping election victory.

Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar of the External Affairs Ministry tweeted: “Working together to further deepen our strategic partnership. Pompeo called on PM to exchange views on various aspects of Indo-US relationship.”

The spokesman said that Modi will meet President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming G20 Summit at Osaka in Japan.

After meeting Modi, Pompeo headed for a meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

The Secretary of State arrived in India on Tuesday night on a two-day visit.

This is the third India visit by a Secretary of State during the Trump administration.

Later in the day, Pompeo will have a Working Lunch with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar followed by a round-table meeting with Indian and US business leaders. He will also deliver a policy speech at the India International Centre.

The two sides are likely to discuss the trade dispute, H1-B visas and India’s purchase of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia.
