Truck driver held for crushing pregnant woman to death
New Delhi, Dec 26 (IANS) A 25-year old truck driver was arrested on Tuesday for crushing a pregnant woman to death and injuring her husband while the couple was going to hospital for a checkup, police said.
Police said the accident occurred at around 9.30 a.m when Janki, 28, who was six months pregnant, was going with her husband to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital in Mangolpuri area of west Delhi.
“When the couple reached near Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital, the speeding truck rammed the motorcycle, and they fell on the road. The rear wheel of truck crushed Janki, who died on the spot while her husband sustained injuries,” a senior police officer said.
Locals and passerby overpowered the driver, Ashu Khan, who tried to escape from the spot, and thrashed him before handing him over to the police, the officer added.
Janki, a resident of Rani Kheda village in Najafgarh, used to visit Sanjay Gandhi hospital for routine check up, he added.
Khan, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was booked for causing death due to rash and negligent driving, said the officer.
