New Delhi | Supreme Court on Monday asked Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to admit a Dalit student by creating an additional seat.

The petitioner Prince Jaibir Singh had missed out on a seat in IIT Bombay due to the non-payment of fees. He had failed to make online fee payment in time because of a technical glitch.

A bench comprising justices D Y Chandrachud and A S Bopanna directed the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) to accommodate Jaibir in IIT Bombay by creating an extra-seat without affecting those already admitted to the prestigious institute.

17-year old Jaibir had secured the 864th rank in the scheduled caste category and was allotted a seat at the IIT- Bombay but because of non-payment of fees he was denied admission.
