The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of journalist Prashant Kanojia who was arrested by the UP police for sharing a post against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Kanojia’s wife Jageesha Arora had moved Supreme Court on Monday challenging her husband’s arrest. Kanojia made satirical comments on Adityanath purely based on the alleged claim of a woman that she was in regular touch with the Chief Minister via video conferencing.

Prashant Kanojia was allegedly picked up by the Uttar Pradesh Police from Delhi on Saturday. Though, his formal arrest was shown from Lucknow.

According to ANI, the Supreme Court observed, “Opinions may vary, he (Prashant) probably should not have published or written that tweet, but on what basis was he arrested.”

Supreme Court hearing plea of freelance journalist, Prashant Kanojia observed, “Liberty of citizen is sacrosanct and non-negotiable. It is guaranteed by the constitution and it cannot be infringed”.

The apex court ordered the immediate release of Kanojia.
