New Delhi :  Jamia Milia Islamia on Wednesday dismissed news reports which claimed Sabzar Ahmad Sofi, who was killed by security forces in a shootout in Kashmir earlier in the day, was its student, saying that Sofi never studied at the university.
“The media reports about Sabzar Ahmad Sofi, who has been reported by media as a former research student of JMI is factually incorrect, false and mischievous. No such student by the name of Sabzar Ahmad Sofi has ever been on the rolls of the university or registered as research student.

“Moreover, we do not have any Botany department in the University,” the central university said in a statement.
“This news has been published without due verification from the university authorities. No due care has been exercised before publishing the name of the university. The university demands an immediate corrective action by publishing a suitable corrigendum refuting the frivolous claims,” it added.
Sofi, said to be a Ph.D. scholar from Jamia in several news reports, was killed earlier in the day along with his associate Asif Ahmed in Nowgam in the outskirts of Srinagar city.
