Breaching all previous records, petrol in Mumbai was available for Rs 86.25 a litre on Sunday. This is the highest price Mumbaikars have ever paid for a litre of petrol. Also this is the highest per litre petrol price across any metro.

Last time it was on May 29, 2018 when the petrol was sold for Rs 86.24 in Mumbai.

Diesel too touched a record high of Rs 75.12 per litre in the same metro.

The surge in fuel prices is largely due to the rise in the cost of crude oil and the high excise duty levied on the transportation of fuel in the country.

The rise in diesel prices, that surpassed previous highs across metros, gains significance as it is mostly used in vehicles for transportation of food and agricultural products, which could lead to higher inflation.
