National Sugar Institute prepares hand sanitizers, shows way to sugar industry

Kanpur: At a time when due to Coronavirus scare, hand sanitizers have gone off the shelves, National Sugar Institute (NSI)-Kanpur has shown way to the sugar industry how can they produce sanitizers to meet the market needs. NSI also demonstrated how sugar factories can produce good quality sanitizers in distilleries attached to it, especially at a time when the demand for the same is quite high and people are being advised by medical experts to keep washing hands or sanitizing them to keep Coronavirus at bay.
NSI has prepared an alcohol based sanitizer which is also enriched with natural ingredients. The hand sanitizers have been developed in the experimental sugar factory situated on NSI campus.
Director, Natural Sugar Institute, Professor Narendra Mohan informed that the sanitizer besides containing 80% ethyl alcohol, contains hydrogen peroxide and glycerol as per the guidelines of World Health Organization. However, it has been enriched by adding aloe-vera extract and rose water, he added.
Prof Mohan said that the sanitizer has been developed not for commercial exploitation but to inspire and provide technical know how to the sugar industry as to how they can produce such good quality sanitizers in the distilleries attached to their sugar factories.
At this juncture, while this sanitizer shall be of immense utility for the service of the mankind, in future, the sugar industry may look into venturing into healthcare sector too enhancing their product range, Prof. Mohan said.
Many sugar factories and machinery manufacturers from India and Nepal are already in touch with NSI and shortly such product from the sugar industry shall be available in the market in which the institute shall have a significant role.
