New Delhi: Tablighi Jamaat chief Maulana Mohd Saad Kandhalvi admitted that the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has registered a criminal case against him and it had sent him a notice for questioning, while also responding to the charges against him.

Maulana Saad’s admission came in a letter which his son and Jamaat committee member Mohd Yusuf Saad on Friday shared with IANS.

According to his son, “all the news about the Jamaat headquarters in the media since March 31, 2020 are just a conspiracy to malign its image. Tablighi Jamaat is not even part of any political organisation. As far as Maulana Saad is concerned, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has filed a criminal case against him”.

According to the statement given by Maulana Yusuf on behalf of Maulana Saad: “As far as the news that people who participated in Markaz were infected of coronavirus, this is just a coincidence. As soon as we got to know about coronavirus, we banned the entry of guests in the headquarters. We have a record of every guest. Along with this, Jamaat made all the efforts to ensure that the guests reach their home.”

The letter further said, “Soon after the Janata Curfew was announced by Prime Minister on March 22, 2020, the government ordered to call off the programme going on in the headquarters which was closed till now. In last few days, all the participants, be it Indians or foreigners, who were stranded in the headquarters due to the lockdown were sent to their homes. They have been quarantined while some of them have also been hospitalised.”

“FIR number 63/2020 has been registered against Maulana Saad. He has also received a notice from the Crime Branch under Section-91 of CrPC. In the notice, the Crime Branch has asked for all documents,” the letter added.

Sources said that the reply sent by the Jamaat headquarters to the Crime Branch on Friday stated that “since the Jamaat headquarters has been sealed by the police and most of the followers of Maulana Saad are under quarantine, therefore, it is difficult to provide the documents as of now. As soon as the Jamaat headquarters will open and quarantined persons will return, we will provide the evidence.”. IANS
