LS passes Constitutional Amendment Bill to grant 10% reservation to economically weaker general category

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Constitutional Amendment Bill to grant 10% reservation in education and government jobs to economically weaker sections of upper castes of all religions.

There were 323 votes in favour of this bill and three were against it. The constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed after a division with 323 members voting in its favour and three against it.

The reservation is meant for economically weaker upper caste sections whose annual income is less than Rs 8 lakh and who has less than 5 acres of agriculture land.
