Kanpur: A foreign student enrolled in a course at IITKanpur has levelled serious charges of molestation against a senior professor of the institute. The girl student had on Sunday lodged a complaint with the institute authorities after which they swung into action.

The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the institute has already started investigation under the Sexual Harassment Of Women at Workplace Act following the Supreme Court guidelines.

Deputy Director of IITKanpur, Prof Manindra Agarwal in a statement said, “Last week, a complaint was filed by a girl student against a faculty member for inappropriate conduct. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the institute started investigations under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act following Supreme Court guidelines. Immediately, on the recommendations of ICC, the said faculty member was removed from teaching responsibilities of the course in which the girl student was registered.”

He also said that the institute has a zero-tolerance policy against any deviant behaviour and strict actions would be initiated once the recommendations of the ICC are submitted.

There are a number of foreign students at IITKanpur who come here for pursuing different courses. These are generally short term courses ranging from six month duration to one year. The student who has levelled allegations against the professor was also one among those students who are pursuing a course here.
