Union minister Santosh Gangwar has courted controversy by saying that in a big country like India people should not make an issue out of one or two rape cases. He made the remark on the day when President Ramand Nath Kovind gave his ascent to an ordinance allowing courts to give death sentence for child rape below the age of 12 years.

The statement came in response to the major outrage across the country over the gangrape and murder of a nine year old girl in Kathua and the rape of a 17 year old girl in Unnao allegedly by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

News Agency ANI quoted Santosh Gangwar as saying, “Aisi ghatnaye durbhagyapurn hoti, par kabhi kabhi roka nahi ja sakta hai.Sarkar sakriya hai sab jagah, karyavahi kar rahi hai. Itne bade desh mein ek do ghatna ho jaye to baat ka batangad nahi banana chahiye (Such incidents are unfortunate but sometimes these cannot be stopped. Government is active at all fronts, action is being taken. In such a big country if one or two incidents (rape) happen then these should not be blown out of proportion)”.
