Ganpathy, incharge of airport security, said the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) would take charge of security of small airports for a short period as per the new model.

“The CISF will take over the security command of small airports for around two hours prior to the arrival of the airplane and during this period, its officials will do passenger frisking and other security procedures.”

The CISF team deputed for the security procedure at such airports would be relieved from duty after the departure of the plane, said Ganpathy, adding that further security responsibility of these airports would be handed over to police or other agencies.

According to him, the new model will help reduce over 3,000 CISF personnel, and small airport operators will not be incurring huge expenses on security apparatus.

The officer said the proposal for the new model had been suggested to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in keeping with the government’s low-cost flying scheme “Udan” for regional connectivity.
