In a shocking incident, a 34-year-old woman was arrested in Chandigarh on Thursday for allegedly sexually abusing a class X student who used to take tution from her, Hindustan Times reported. A few days before she got arrested, the woman had reportedly tried to commit ‘suicide’ at the boy’s house after confontration with his parents.

The teacher has been booked under section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Chandigarh senior superintendent of police Nilambari Vijay Jagdale told HT.

The victim, a 14-year-old boy and the accused teacher are neighbours and lived in the same locality in Chandigarh. Since the families knew each other well, the boy’s parents sent their son and also the daughter to the teacher’s house for tutions in September last year.

Later the teacher asked the parents to send their daughter to attend tuition class separately so that she could ‘focus’ on the boy’s studies. “The parents agreed but on the pretext of imparting him knowledge, she started luring the boy physically in the beginning of 2018. She also gave him a SIM card to stay in touch with her,” Dr Sangeeta Jund, the project director of Childline, Chandigarh, told the daily.

As the boy’s performance in school dipped, his mother barred him from going to the tuition classes. However, the accused, who is a mother of two girls – aged ten and eight – had apparently become possessive of the boy and pleaded the parents to meet her with their son at her house on Monday for one last time, Dr Sangeeta said.

Here a high drama ensued when the woman locked up the boy in a room in her house in the presence of his parents, her husband and her daughters. Dr Jund said that woman asked her husband to stay out of the matter and kept screaming that the boy will stay with her.

It was when the neighbours intervened the boy could be rescued. But when the boy and his parents left the woman’s house, she reportedly followed them and barged into their house. She then got hold of a cough syrup bottle and gulped it down, threatening to commit suicide, Hindustan Times reported.

The boy’s parents then called the police and the woman was taken to the hospital on Monday night where she was administered treatment for a day.

In the meanwhile, the distressed parents of the boys contacted Childline (A telephone helpline for children in distress) who later guided them to lodge a police complaint.
