A fascinating political development is unfolding amidst the West Bengal Assembly election trends. Despite a strong wave in favor of the BJP, Humayun Kabir—the founder of the ‘Aam Janta Unnayan Party’ and a former TMC leader—has secured substantial leads in both the Rejinagar and Naoda constituencies.
The Road to Defiance: Separation from TMC
Formerly an MLA from Bharatpur, Kabir sparked a political firestorm just before the elections by announcing his plan to construct a “Babri Masjid” in West Bengal. This declaration led to his immediate suspension from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Following his exit, he established his own political outfit. On December 6, 2025, marking the anniversary of the Babri demolition, Kabir laid the foundation stone for the mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad, and officially commenced construction on February 11.
Electoral Dominance and Strong Leads
Current counting figures show Kabir maintaining a dominant position:
Rejinagar: He is leading BJP candidate Bapan Ghosh by a significant margin of 52,608 votes.
Nowda: He holds a lead of 18,509 votes over BJP’s Rana Mandal.
Confident of his victory, Kabir congratulated the people of West Bengal for rejecting the TMC. He further leveled serious allegations against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her administration of “looting” the state.
A 300-Crore Project Under Scrutiny
The proposed mosque, modeled after the original structure in Ayodhya, is a symbolic project with an estimated cost of 300 crore. Kabir claims the project will be funded through public participation and donations, with a completion target of two years.
This project remains a major flashpoint in state politics. During the election campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a firm stand, asserting that as long as a single BJP worker is alive, the construction of a Babri Masjid would not be permitted in Bengal.
