New Delhi | A long-awaited moment of democratic celebration unfolded in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region on Monday (January 26), as hundreds of villagers who had lived for decades under the shadow of left-wing extremism celebrated Republic Day for the first time. In a historic development, the tricolour was hoisted and Republic Day festivities were held in 47 villages across Bijapur, Narayanpur, and Sukma districts—marking a powerful symbol of change and hope.

According to the Chhattisgarh government, the significant improvement in the security situation is the result of a coordinated strategy adopted over the past two years by the Centre and the state, sustained anti-Maoist operations by security forces, and growing cooperation from local communities.

As part of these efforts, 59 new security camps have been established in Maoist-affected areas to ensure a permanent administrative and security presence. Last year, Republic Day celebrations were held in 53 villages, and this year 47 more villages have joined the democratic tradition.

For the first time, residents in these villages enthusiastically participated in national celebrations. Areas once considered highly sensitive and inaccessible for public events are now witnessing voluntary participation in democratic activities—reflecting increasing trust in governance.

At present, more than 100 security camps are operational across the Bastar region. Beyond strengthening security, their presence has accelerated development. Basic services such as roads, schools, healthcare, communication networks, and banking facilities are gradually reaching remote and previously neglected villages. The recent restoration of banking services in the Maoist-affected Jagargunda area stands as a notable example of this progress.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said that Bastar is steadily being brought out of the shadow of violence and into the mainstream of development. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Chhattisgarh government continues to work towards strengthening peace, trust, and democratic values in the region, he said.

The tricolour hoisted across these 47 villages on January 26 has emerged as a powerful symbol of peace, democracy, and a new beginning for Bastar.
