Giant 30-Foot Whale Found Dead in Odisha, Postmortem Examination Done

New Delhi | Panic and concern spread in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district after a massive whale, measuring around 30 feet in length, was found dead near the mouth of the Devi River. The discovery of such a large marine animal caused shock among local residents and fishermen.

The incident occurred in the Nadiakhua area of Balikuda block, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Bandhar Marine Police Station and Bandhar Forest Range.

Local fishermen were the first to spot the carcass near the river mouth and immediately informed the marine police and forest department. Following the alert, a forest department team reached the site by boat and took custody of the body. Arrangements were then made to conduct a post-mortem examination.

According to local forest officer Priyabrata Chowdhury, a special team from Nandankanan Zoo was called in view of the seriousness of the case. A veterinary medical team also conducted the post-mortem.

Officials said the whale was first seen stuck near the river mouth on Saturday evening, but darkness prevented immediate access to the site. On Sunday morning, officials from the Kujang Forest Division, along with the medical team from Nandankanan, reached the spot by boat. The carcass was later carefully transported to Cuttack, where a detailed post-mortem was conducted.

The forest department has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are examining whether the whale died due to natural causes or because of injury, illness, pollution, or entanglement in fishing nets.
