Former IPS Officer Amitabh Thakur Granted Bail by Court in Defamation Case

Varanasi | Former IPS officer and National President of Azad Adhikar Sena, Amitabh Thakur, got relief from the court on Friday. In a case registered at Chowk police station, the court of District Judge Sanjeev Shukla allowed his bail application and ordered his release from jail. The court directed his release on two bail bonds of ₹50,000 each along with a personal bond.

During the hearing, Amitabh Thakur’s counsel Anuj Yadav argued that the case against him was filed due to political vendetta and under pressure from the administration. He said Thakur, a former IPS officer, was forcibly dismissed from service for raising his voice against alleged corruption and wrongful policies of the state government.

The defence further told the court that after his dismissal, Thakur formed a social organisation and continued to highlight alleged illegal activities and corruption involving officials and politicians. The lawyer argued that the social media post in question was not intended to harm anyone’s reputation but was made in a dignified manner while demanding a lawful investigation as a responsible citizen and social activist.

On the other hand, the prosecution and the complainant opposed the bail plea, stating that several cases were already registered against the accused and that he had a history sheet. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted bail to Amitabh Thakur.

It may be noted that on December 9, a complaint was filed at Chowk police station by Ambrish Singh Bhola, a resident of Badi Piyari, leader of Hindu Yuva Vahini and honorary member of BDA. He alleged that on November 30, Amitabh Thakur had posted a video on social media accusing him of involvement in criminal cases and the well-known cough syrup case without evidence, which damaged his social reputation.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Amitabh Thakur, his wife Dr. Nutan Thakur, and another person.

Reacting to the bail order, Devendra Singh Rana, National Organisation Secretary of Azad Adhikar Sena, said, “This is an important step towards justice. The fight for truth will continue, and ultimately truth will prevail.”
