IIT Kanpur student found dead in hostel room, suicide suspected

Kanpur | An IIT-Kanpur student was found dead in his hostel room on Monday (December 30) afternoon. The student is suspected to have died by suicide after allegedly hanging himself. The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. A suicide note has been recovered from the spot.

The deceased has been identified as Jai Singh Meena (26), a resident of Avadhpuri area in Ajmer. He was son of Gaurishankar Meena. Jai was a final-year student of Biological Engineering at IIT Kanpur and was residing in Room No. 148 of Hostel No. 2 on the campus.

According to officials, on Monday, Jai Singh’s family tried contacting but there was no response. Worried parents then contacted one of his friends. He informed other students about Jai not taking calls.

Students thereafter reached Jai’s room and tried locating him. There was no response to the repeated knocks on the door. When they looked through the window, they were shocked to see Jai hanging from a pipe with the help of a bedsheet.

The incident was immediately reported to the IIT administration, following which the Kalyanpur police and a forensic team reached the spot and began their investigation. A notebook was found in his room in which he had allegedly written - “Sorry everyone…”. This has been made a part of the investigation.

The family has been informed about the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and the family is expected to reach Kanpur on Tuesday. According to police, the death occurred around 10 to 12 hours before the body was discovered. ADCP West Kapil Dev Singh stated that the cause of death is under investigation and that any allegations raised by the family will be thoroughly examined.

Following the incident, IIT Kanpur issued an official statement expressing deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Jai Singh Meena. The institute noted that he joined IIT Kanpur in July 2020 and was a bright and promising student. The administration extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wished them strength during this difficult time.
