The murders were reported from Shikaripara in Dumka district, around 35 km from Ranchi where Maoists are active, though police ruled out the involvement of the guerrillas.

Somaya Murmu and Arjun Rana were involved in the construction of the 6.5-km road between Maluti and Lalitakundi and were assigned to take care of the machinery during the night.

Police suspect they were killed by criminals after they were refused levy or protection money.
