New Delhi:  Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that he is no longer the Congress President and added that the party should pick a new chief quickly “without further delay”.

“I am not in the process of selecting the new President of the Congress,” Gandhi told the media in Parliament. He also said that he had already submitted his resignation and he was no longer the party president.

Gandhi had refused to continue as the Congress President after the party suffered a major blow in the Lok Sabha elections, winning just 52 of the 542 seats.

He had offered to step down from his post at the CWC (Congress Working Committee) meeting on May 25, taking moral responsibility for party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha Elections.

But his resignation was unanimously rejected by the CWC. Several senior party leaders have tried convincing Rahul to continue as the Congress president but he has remained unfazed.

Rahul had become the Congress President in 2017.
