An ex-serviceman posted as a private guard at Punjab’s Gurdaspur Central Jail shot dead his wife and mother-in-law with his government-issued AK-47 rifle and later died by suicide. The incident took place around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to police, the accused, Gurpreet Singh, first opened fire on his wife Akvinder Kaur, and then shot her mother Gurjeet Kaur. Both died on the spot. After committing the double murder, Gurpreet fled and hid inside the residential quarters of Scheme Number 7 in Gurdaspur.
When police reached the spot to arrest him, he threatened to shoot himself. Police tried for nearly an hour to persuade him to surrender but he refused to lay down his weapon and eventually shot himself leading to his death.
Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aditya told mediapersons, “Gurpreet Singh was posted at Gurdaspur Central Jail and had been issued a government AK-47 rifle for duty. Amid a domestic dispute, he used this weapon early Wednesday morning to shoot his wife Akvinder Kaur and mother-in-law Gurjeet Kaur. After the murders, he hid in the quarters of Scheme Number 7. When he refused to surrender, he shot himself. The investigation is ongoing.”
According to the victims’ family, the couple had been facing marital tensions for a long time. Akvinder Kaur’s sister Parminder said the two got married in 2016 and their relationship had been strained for years.
She further said, “He used to mentally torture my sister. We had even filed a police complaint against him.”
Describing the incident, Parminder added, “He came home around 3 a.m. and called my sister outside. As soon as she opened the door, he shot her twice. After that, he shot my mother as well.”
