Amid sexual harassment allegations, former editor MJ Akbar has resigned from his post of Minster of State For External Affairs. The allegations were levelled against Akbar by several women journalists.

Akbar issued a statement on Wednesday evening stating that since he has decided to seek justice in a court of law in his personal capacity, he deems it appropriate to step down from office and challenge false accusations levied against him.

The statement from Akbar further read, “I have therefore, tendered my resignation from the office of Minister of State for External Affairs. I am deeply grateful to the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and to the External Affairs Minister Smt. Sushma Swaraj for the opportunity they gave me to serve my country.”

The resignation came a day before a Delhi court is to take up the defamation case filed by Akbar against one of the journalists.
