Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav would be contesting the Lok Sabha election from Azamgarh – a seat from where his father Mulayam Singh Yadav used to contest till now.

Mulayam Singh Yadav is the sitting MP from Azamgarh. Announcement of Akhilesh Yadav contesting from Azamgarh has ended speculation that Mulayam Singh would once again be contesting from this seat.

In the 2014 elections, SP patriarch had won both the Mainpuri and Azamgarh parliamentary constituencies.

Azamgarh is seen as an easy constituency for the Samajwadi Party.

Samajwadi Party released a list of its candidates on its official Twitter handle on Sunday which also mentioned the name of senior party leader Azam Khan. Azam would be contesting from Rampur.

Azam is a former state minister.

So far, the Samajwadi Party has announced 19 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls.

The party had won five seats in the 2014 General Elections. BSP had not been able to win even a single seat in Uttar Pradesh.

But this time SP and BSP are contesting in alliance. Rashtriya Lok Dal is also a part of the alliance. The SP is this time contesting on 37 seats, BSP on 38 and RLD on three seats.
